Late 1800s Sontag Shawl With Provenance
“Hug-Me-Tight” made by Anna Belle Ragan B. In Putnam County Feb. 21st 1867 D. In Chicago October 5 1917. Daughter of William Henry Ragan. She sold handmade articles to Marshall Field Stores in Chicago.
A stunning example of the classic Victorian era Sontag woolen shawl. Comes with a note of provenance as to who made it. Worthy of framing, but sturdy enough to wear! Bright cherry red wool with cream trim and black accents. Charming repairs. Just perfect!
Condition: overall excellent for age. Note is sewn on, but can be easily removed and saved if you’d like to use this as a wearable piece. Wool is clean and has no smell. There are some areas with original repairs as well as mends that appear to be newer. Some small areas of loose yarn. Presents beautifully.
